Following the move of the airport from Kai Tak to Chek Lap Kok in 1998, Government had lifted the strict building height restriction in Kowloon City area. As a result, many old tenement buildings were acquired and redeveloped into high-rise buildings on small sites (commonly known as “toothpick-like buildings”). I have no opposition on urban redevelopment, especially on those poorly maintained tenement buildings, redevelopment may benefit property owners and the society as a whole. However, the property hegemony, who dominates the property redevelopment market in Hong Kong, had primary focused on redeveloping into fancy, pricy properties. The gentrification and unaffordable properties had directly impacted the living environment in the old grass-rooted neighborhoods.
Reflected on the shiny glass panes of a pompous pseudo-luxury apartment block are worn facades of tenement houses for the poor as well as two sentences by Hong Kong poet Chan Chi-tak, from his To Hell with the Market.
