"Love in New York" is a tale about a group of forlorn women and men facing their tough fate. Maybe these women are just getting a brief moment of solace from the body of a man or a woman, but they just cannot find a place they could call home: Xu Zhixing, from Beijing, has lived in the US for 7 years; Ye Xixi is a Chinese Vietnamese, have survived the refugee camp; and Chen Yu, an illegal worker, has sneaked in the States from Mexico. Wong Pik-wan wrote in "Epilogue": "I'm not sure if I could lay out clearly and lucidly such repetitive, mutually indicative and conflicting existence." Text from the work comes from lyrics from Moon Jelly by Taiwanese singer Bobby Chen. The song was recorded after the singer had visited New York in 1996.
