Writing Painting - recent works by Chan Sai-lok 2013-2016
First edition, August 2016 135 x 210mm, 40 pages ISBN 978-988-99885-9-3 HKD70-
This book is a collection of works from 2013 to 2016, and is an introspection on the use of images and text in paintings. The first part of the book features paintings that transformed phonemes into materials and were then combined with images. The second part of the book explores the possibilities of words/Chinese characters as phonemes, and how creative writing frees itself from conventional words as sign. “I have realised that the memory, understanding of and emotional attachment to the shape of Traditional Chinese characters are a precious cultural identity and experience. Words are kept alive only in everyday life, while my paintings live in a world of words.”

Future, at variance with memories (out of print)
First edition, August 2008 130 x 210mm, 40 pages ISBN 978-988-99885-3-1 HKD60-
Sadness is not frightening, nor should we be shy of it. We are too used to suppressing our weaknesses and avoiding to come face-to-face with our sorrow. It is time to cast off unnecessary manners and let go of our emotions when we should, and don't shed tears in vain. This book is a collection of moments of loss in the forms of painting, film and photography, and 13 works of flash fiction that illuminate the concept of Future, at Variance with Memories. Eponymous exhibition was held in May 2008.
